Mid-Pacific Students Present Proposals for “Kauhale” to Special Guest Governor Green

Mid-Pacific Students Present Proposals for “Kauhale” to Special Guest Governor Green
Mid-Pacific Communications Staff

As part of Mid-Pacific’s year-end Celebration of Learning, our 9th grade MPX students presented their innovative solutions to support people experiencing homelessness in Hawai‘i through kauhale (community housing) design projects.

Over six weeks, students engaged in immersive, real-world learning experiences. They conducted in-depth research, collaborated in teams, and built thoughtful, sustainable kauhale models. Their work reflected a strong commitment to kuleana and environmental stewardship, as well as a deep understanding of the human need for belonging—especially for those without housing.

Governor Josh Green opened the event, joined by a panel of expert judges: Emilio Placencia and Bubba Mayor of the Hawai‘i Air National Guard, Jessie Mitchell of the Hawai‘i Center for Children and Families, Sara Ironhill of Partners in Care, and Councilmember and Mid-Pacific alumnus Matt Weyer ’06.

Congratulations to the winning team behind “Hale Maluhia a ola”:

Hunter H. ’28, Braden L. ’28, Uluwehi A. ’28, and Joe W. ’28. Mahalo to Governor Josh Green and Councilmember Matt Weyer ’06 for supporting our students’ learning journey, and to all of our expert judges for your time and thoughtful feedback.
