MPX Project Blends Community Service and STEM

Posted on December 14, 2022 by Leif Tabernero

Students in Dr. Luong's 9th and 10th grade eXploratory course (MPX) concluded an extensive semester-long project that blended community service and STEM. Students designed, built, and installed plant stands, water catchments, and bookshelves for residents of the Institute for Human Services and Kahauiki Village shelters.

MPX 9th and 10th graders further sharpened their design, drawing skills, and knowledge of power tools to create plant stands for citrus trees they planted earlier this month at a shelter for women. The citrus trees also served as the biology component of the project, learning about photosynthesis, water uptake and distribution in plants, water chemistry, and water conservation. Thank you to Shelby Dixon and the shelter staff at IHS for supporting this class project.
