Mid-Pacific Institute Sophomore Davis Lee played in the Hawaii Tourism Authority Pro-Junior Challenge Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Waialae Country Club. Lee, the 2017 Hawaii State Junior Golf Association Player of the Year (Boys 15-18) was the youngest participant.

Lee was paired with first-year PGA professional Marty Dou from China. Dou, just 20 years old, is the first Chinese-born player to win on the Web.Com Tour and to earn a PGA Tour card. The Dou/Davis team had birdie putts on each hole, and finished at even par in fourth place.

"I learned a lot from the pros," Lee said. "Playing with professionals is good motivation for me, to try to reach their level. It shows that I can get there if I practice hard."

Lee will remain busy in the spring and summer, trying to qualify for summer tournaments, and also visiting some potential colleges.

The Waialae event paired five of the state's most elite junior golfers (3 Seniors, a Junior and a Sophomore) with PGA Tour pros Tony Finau, Mark Wilson, Jimmy Walker, Marty Dou, and Kyle Thompson. The annual event is a three-hole alternate-shot exhibition, with funds raised from sponsors to benefit the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association.

It was a fantastic experience for Davis and the other junior golfers. They were each interviewed and featured on KHON Wake Up 2day with Jai Cunningham, and were able to practice chipping and sand shots with PGA favorites such as Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas. The spectators cheered for each shot, as family members and friends watched.

"I was a little nervous off the first tee, but by the third hole, it was just like any other tournament," Lee said. "On the third hole, I had a solid drive and played a really good second shot. My birdie putt just missed the hole. I hope to have the opportunity again next year."

Myah McDonald, also a Mid-Pacific sophomore and golf team member, was his caddy.
