When the children began constructing Sunny’s tortoise house, the work shifted from imagining possibilities to making intentional decisions grounded in care, functionality, and empathy. Using their large plan, the children worked in small groups creating the different parts of the house that they wanted to make. This process of constructing was important because it asked the children to hold both the technical and the relational aspects of building at the same time. They had to plan, problem-solve, test stability, and revise their ideas, but always with Sunny at the center of their thinking.
