Moments That Matter: Caring and Connection at Mid-Pacific
Carin Chang

One of the things that makes Mid-Pacific so special is the way our community cares for one another. Support and kindness are not just ideas we talk about with students—they are values we model every day, and our students carry them forward in meaningful ways.

Recently, a simple question opened the door to a much deeper and meaningful conversation in our classroom. As many of you may have heard, my mother has since passed, and the support and kindness extended to me by students, families, and colleagues has been incredibly touching. That care is yet another layer of the strong community feeling that defines Mid-Pacific.

That moment in the classroom led students to begin sharing their own experiences with loss. One student shared that they had recently lost a dog, which prompted another student to share they had gone through the same experience. Another spoke about losing a grandparent. What followed was a natural exchange of empathy—students offering words of comfort and understanding to one another in a way that was sincere and heartfelt.

What stood out most was how instinctively our students supported one another. There was no prompting, no script—just kindness. That moment reflected something larger than a single conversation; it reflected the culture of care that exists here every day.

That care is reinforced in so many ways across our campus. Ms. Maria is always available to support students when they need it, whether it’s for something big or something quietly weighing on their hearts. Ms. Abe consistently checks in with students, asking how they’re feeling and thoughtfully alerting teachers and counselors when extra support might be helpful. This communication helps ensure students are seen and supported in meaningful ways.

Dr. Hussey and Mrs. Balubar also take time to check in with students in a thoughtful, gentle way—another layer of support that helps students feel seen and valued. These small moments matter. They remind students that there are many adults on campus who care deeply about their well-being.

Because of the size of our school, this level of communication and connection is possible. Teachers, counselors, and administrators work closely together, sharing insights and looking out for students as a team. That collaboration helps create a sense of safety, belonging, and community that is truly unique to Mid-Pacific.

Moments like these remind us that support and caring are not just part of our core values—they are lived out every day. We are grateful to be part of a community that leads by example and teaches our students the importance of kindness, empathy, and connection.
