Show & Tell: The Power of Stories
There’s something magical happening in our classroom lately—and it all started with one simple request.
A couple of months ago, one of our students asked if they could share something special they brought from home with the class. Of course, we said yes—and that small moment sparked something big. As soon as the first student shared, others began to ask if they could bring something in, too. Before we knew it, our classroom had started a brand-new learning opportunity, completely driven by student interest and excitement.
Whether it’s a special toy, a pet picture, a drawing, or a souvenir from a recent trip, our students have been so eager to bring in items that matter to them. And sharing time isn’t just fun (though it definitely is!)—it’s also helping us grow in so many meaningful ways.
When our friends talk about something important to them, they’re building strong communication skills. They’re learning how to organize their thoughts, speak clearly, and make eye contact with a group—skills that will support them not just in school, but for life. We’re seeing so many students shine in this space!
Even more inspiring is how confident our class is becoming! Some of our quieter, more reserved friends are now asking to share—raising their hands with excitement and eager to participate. It’s incredible to see their faces light up as they tell their stories and watch their classmates listen with curiosity and respect.
As audience members, students are growing as active listeners. They're practicing how to give their attention, respond thoughtfully, and ask great follow-up questions. As they listen to their friends, they’re also building vocabulary and learning new words—from types of animals to activities, places around the world, and the names of cultural foods and holidays.
Even more powerful, we celebrate the rich diversity in our classroom. We’ve learned about different cultures, unique animals, and faraway places—right from our very own room. From family traditions and travel stories to facts about beloved pets, each sharing moment is a window into someone else’s world.
We’re also learning from each other in so many other ways. Sharing time has truly opened the door to countless discoveries. We’ve explored traditions, heard about amazing accomplishments, and found common ground with classmates we may not have expected. Each share helps us understand one another better and strengthens our classroom community.
What started as one student’s brave moment has turned into an almost daily classroom routine that’s building community, boosting confidence, and filling our days with joy and discovery.
Keep the items and stories coming—we can’t wait to learn more!
