A Promise to the Future: Why Aspirations 2035 Matters

A Promise to the Future: Why Aspirations 2035 Matters
Dr. Paul Turnbull

Mid-Pacific's strategic plan takes flight

In Professional Capital, Andy Hargreaves and Michael Fullan assert that “the future of learning depends absolutely on the future of teaching.” I share this conviction, but I add a crucial stipulation: Great teaching cannot happen in silos. At Mid-Pacific, we believe the school’s entire environment – its system – is the necessary foundation for consistent, visibly great teaching. This belief is one our community has lived by since our founding in 1908.

From its inception at the height of the first industrial revolution, Mid-Pacific prioritized an inclusive, innovative school environment. We were the school that brought diverse learners together when others separated them. We embraced the arts and technology long before they were widespread campus trends.

Aspirations 2035 doubles down on this 118-year legacy.

As a living plan evolved from our original 20-year framework, Aspirations 2035 will act as our guide during a period of historic global disruption. It will unify the Mid-Pacific community behind a shared purpose: ensuring that our focus remains fixed on the student experience.

The importance of this living plan becomes even more visible when we consider our third-graders, the Class of 2035. When we witness their curiosity and potential, we are reminded that preparing students for the future is not an abstract exercise; it’s an imperative.

To embrace this imperative, Aspirations 2035 focuses on three powerful, interconnected initiatives:

Mid-Pacific Aspirations 2035 Strategic Plan

Strengthening the Mid-Pacific Community

  • Because authentic relationships and a feeling of belonging are foundational to high quality learning, risk-taking, and thriving on campus and beyond.

Our core values of Diversity and ʻOhana are central to Aspirations 2035. The research is clear: when students feel they have a voice and a sense of belonging in a community that values diverse viewpoints and experiences, their academic outcomes soar and their mental health is supported. That is why belonging is a pillar within the Mid-Pacific mission statement and a design principle within Aspirations 2035. It will inform our future-focused work to strengthen the Mid-Pacific community, and to develop a new schedule, a new middle school building, and new programs.

Deeper Learning

  • Because the world rewards those who can master and apply knowledge as creative, caring, and collaborative teammates.

The complexity of the modern world requires students to become creative problem-solvers and adaptable thinkers—two traits identified in the Mid-Pacific Learner Profile. As a school that pioneered inquiry-based early childhood learning and design thinking for middle schoolers, our evolution toward a schoolwide Deeper Learning approach is natural. This pedagogical approach will influence how we develop new interdisciplinary coursework, integrate the arts and cutting-edge technology across campus, and refine our challenging academic environment. By prioritizing Deeper Learning, we will continually remind ourselves to cultivate graduates who are ready to innovate and lead with confidence and care.

Talent Development

  • Because our students deserve the best educators and support staff in the state, supported by a culture of growth.

The successful realization of Aspirations 2035 relies on the quality and dedication of our faculty and staff. Investing in Talent Development is a core promise that will drive institutional growth in the next decade. We believe that direct investment in professional learning, mentorship, and a growth-mindset culture will lead directly to improved performance in classrooms and supporting offices across campus. Rooted in our ongoing integration of the Learner, Teacher-as-Learner, and Professional Profiles, Talent Development will become a sustainable pillar that empowers every employee to deliver the unparalleled experience our students deserve.

Over the coming years, Aspirations 2035 will guide carefully thought-out initiatives designed to strengthen our community, expand Deeper Learning, and support talent development. These initiatives will reflect our commitment to empowering our students to thrive with confidence, adaptability, and integrity, and will exemplify our ongoing leadership in the Hawaiian educational community.
