Mid-Pacific Institute junior Marcus Holyfield has been one of the Interscholastic League Honolulu's top basketball players the past two years, but has flown somewhat under the radar, overshadowed by others from more high-profile programs.
Last Saturday, however, Holyfield and his Owls teammates soared into the spotlight as he scored a career-high 34 points to help MPI stun Punahou — The Advertiser's No. 1-ranked team in the state at the time — 66-48.
It was the Owls' first victory over the Buffanblu in recent memory.
"It feels really great," said Holyfield, a 6-foot-2 guard. "It feels really good to have everybody come together the way we did."

January 10, 2008Spring Season Tryout Dates
Golf - Boys and Girls Varsity will have tryouts on February 4th and 5th at the Moanalua Golf Course. Boys JV and Girls Varsity II Candidates have tryouts on February 4th and 5th at the Fort Shafter Golf Course. A bus will take the golfers to the courses both days. It will leave campus around 3pm (meet at Scudder Dining Hall near the bus turn around area). The bus will depart Fort Shafter golf course at 6:15pm and then go to pick up the students at Moanalua Golf Course for return to campus. Parents can pick students up either at the golf courses at 6pm or at the school sometime between 6:45pm and 7pm.
Boys and Girls Intermediate (grades 7-8) golf tryouts will be held on February 6 and 7 at the Hawaii Kai Executive Par 3 course. A bus will take the golfers to the course on both days. It will leave at 3pm and will depart from the course back to MPI at 6:15pm. Parents can pick their child up at the course or at MPI. The bus should arrive back at MPI around 6:40pm.
Boys Volleyball - Boys in grades 7-12 interested in trying out for the volleyball teams should attend tryouts on February 4 at 3:30pm in the gym. Call Coach Kainoa Obrey 342-1520 if you have any questions.
Track & Field - Boys and girls in grades 7-12 should attend track and field practice on Monday, February 4th at 3:30pm. Meet at the soccer field at the picnic tables by the gym. Call Coach Aaron Pierson at 386-3547 if you have any questions.
Softball- Girls in grades 7-12 interested in trying out for the softball teams should attend practice on Monday, February 4th at the softball field. Call Varsity Coach Willie Quinn 973-5088 or Intermediate Coach Wendell Sakagawa at 542-5885 if you have any questions.
Girls Water Polo - Girls in grades 7-12 interested in PAC-5 water polo should meet with Coach at 4pm at the pool on February 11. Coach is Dave Schiffner (909)800-4521 can be contacted if you have any questions.
Judo Students in grades 7-12 are informed that practice schedules are Monday through Friday from 4pm - 6pm at University High School Cafeteria. Please do not get to the school earlier than 3:30pm.
Sailing Second sign up meeting for students in grades 9-12 on Tuesday, February 7th at 3pm in Gym Room 19. In order to sail, students must pass a swim test. There are only 2 MANDATORY tryout dates (February 11 from 4-6pm and February 18 from 9am - 12pm). All sailing activity takes place at the Waikiki Yacht Club.
