Boys
and Girls Cross Country Owls soar
at Kaiser Invitational
MPI’s Boys Varsity and Boys Intermediate cross country teams were
among the top teams honored during the Kaiser Invitational at Central
Oahu Regional Park on Saturday, September 30, 2006. The Boys Varsity team
was awarded the event’s fifth-place trophy at the conclusion of
the competition which attracted a field of 16 boys varsity teams from
the ILH, OIA, Maui, and California. MPI’s scoring team members (the
top five finishers for the team), in order of their finishes, were: Scott
Motobu, Philip Hong, Josh Mun, Rick Goto, and CJ Obata. Sophomore sensation
Motobu earned an individual medal after finishing seventh place overall
among 187 runners with a time of 18:45.48 on the three-mile course. He’s
finished in the top 10 at three of four meets so far this season.
MPI Senior Mallory Kurosumi emerged as one of the state’s top runners
in the girls varsity division, earning an individual medal for finishing
in fifteenth place with a time of 23:22.95 over the three-mile course.
The MPI girls’ scoring team of Kurosumi, Kiara Wheeler, Kelsie Ann
Mita, Karli Hamada and Emily Luther captured seventh place.
The Boys Intermediate Team finished third in a field of 12 teams. Scoring
team members, in order of their finishes, were: Daniel Wagner, Taylor
Nemroff, Shane Saito, Jason Anthony, and Ryan Hobson. It was an impressive
showing for the young Owls cross country program which is only in its
third season.

In
keeping with our philosophy of preparing well-rounded citizens, Mid-Pacific
students enjoy many opportunities to participate in athletics, clubs and
other extracurricular activities.
The school offers an extensive athletic program, fielding more than 85
teams throughout the year. Basic requirements to participate include an
annual physical exam, parental approval and medical insurance. Among the
sports offered are baseball, basketball, softball, golf, bowling, tennis,
volleyball, soccer, canoe paddling, kayaking and swimming.
Many find opportunities to excel that they may
not find at larger schools. Athletes and coaches alike are frequent recipients
of statewide recognition, including Athlete of the Year and Coach of the
Year honors.
Teams compete in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu at the varsity,
junior varsity and intermediate levels. In a few sports such as football,
track, water polo, gymnastics and wrestling, Mid-Pacific competes as a
member of Pac-Five, a unique arrangement among smaller independent schools
to field collaborative teams in order to compete with the larger ILH schools.
Student participation is high, with 55 to 60 percent of our students
involved in interscholastic sports. Many find opportunities to excel that
they may not find at larger schools. Athletes and coaches alike are frequent
recipients of statewide recognition, including Athlete of the Year and
Coach of the Year honors.
