After reading the novel, The Things They Carried, by Tim O'Brien, to learn about the Vietnam War from a literary perspective, IB English students had the opportunity to hear about the war from someone who was actually there: a Vietnam Veteran, Tom Stirling.
Tom shared various stories with us, including how he lost one of his good friends in combat.
Student Sophie Gustafson says, "I really appreciated how personal and trusting the guest speaker allowed himself to be, especially when he let us handle his old jacket and dog tags."
We were grateful that Tom brought us into his experience to help us better understand the mindsets of the soldiers and the sentiments surrounding the war.
Student Marilena Vassalli sums up his visit with this takeaway: "His story was powerful in the way he expressed his emotions and feelings of the war. He made it seem so real, instead of just a distant memory."
