Project-Based Global Awareness

After reading a novel set in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (Endangered, by Eliot Schrefer), the 8th grade students of English teacher Billie Napoleon were challenged with the task of creating a board game that would help others become more globally aware, especially about health, cultural, and environmental issues that the continent of Africa faces.
Groups spent three weeks creating their game concepts, designing the board and game pieces, and composing instructions and rules for game play. At the end of the process, 7th graders were invited to play the games and provide feedback.
Eighth graders hope that the 7th graders not only have fun playing the games, but also learn something about Africa in the process.
