Sarah Spalding, a Mid-Pacific senior, became only the second Hawaii student in 32 years to win the English-Speaking Union's National Shakespeare Competition at Lincoln Center in New York City. About 15,000 students participate nationwide in their district competitions annually.

"The School of the Arts congratulates Sarah and her mentor, John Wat," said R. Kevin Doyle, director of Mid-Pacific School of the Arts. "Her hard work, talent and persistence and his expert guidance and support reflect the best of Mid-Pacific's educational philosophy. We are so proud of both of them."

Up against 56 other district champions, Spalding had to twice perform a monologue and a sonnet as Rosalind from "As You Like it." She then had to do a cold reading from "A Winter's Tale."

Spalding won a full tuition scholarship to attend the Young Actors' Summer School at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London, England, for two weeks this summer.

She has been a regular in Mid-Pacific musicals for several years, with major roles in "Grease," "Glass" and "Legally Blonde."
