The Mid-Pacific Globetrotters Club helped ring in the Year of the Rooster, volunteering at the 24th Annual New Year's Ohana Festival at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii (JCCH)/Moilili Field. Students were given different tasks from last year's bouncy rides, including helping move instruments to/from the stage area, counting and carrying juice cans, and passing out flyers.
The Ohana Festival celebrates Hawaii's Japanese heritage not only through food, music, dance, and traditional crafts; but also through martial arts performances, kimono fittings, and other ceremonies. It was a great opportunity for the international students to participate and learn more about the Japanese community in Hawaii. For example, one student who saw the performers dressed in beautiful kimonos expressed interest in learning more about the kimono and Japanese culture.
