Puppet Show

DSC_0232.jpg
CoCo Wiel's 8th grade class presented a puppet show performance for the 4-year-old MPI preschoolers Thursday, March 15 in Bakken Auditorium.

The 8th graders presented themes such as sharing, patience, dreams coming true, counting and cooperation, behind the puppetry scenes, and dealing with strangers.

"The children loved the puppet show," said parent Colleen Otsuka. "I saw so much laughter, excitement and involvement from the preschoolers. The themes that you presented were wonderful... great life lessons! Thank you so much for gearing your puppet show towards them."

"CoCo Wiel and her students NEVER cease to amaze me," said Pua Kaai, middle school principal "She truly has a gift that we are all blessed to receive! The kids were awesome. I am proud of them, and that they exemplify the school motto of honoring one's school. Those pre-schoolers will always remember the energy, whim and hope you brought to them.

The Aloha Peace Wall

DSC_0211.jpg
The fifth and sixth graders will be working on a joint project called The Aloha Peace Wall. Students decorated fabric squares with thoughts, phrases, and pictures that represent their message of "Heiwa" (Peace) and Aloha.

These squares will be assembled into "quilt-like" murals and will be displayed at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center during the Maui visit of the Dalai Lama in April.

In 1989 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his non-violent struggle for the liberation of Tibet. As part of the welcome for this goodwill ambassador, the children of Hawaii will be creating artistic projects to be presented to the 14th Dalai Lama during his public talk on Maui. The fifth and sixth grade students will be exploring the elements of peace, harmony and kindness, and compassion through this artistic medium.

As part of the Aids in Africa Project, MPI seventh graders created banners, ribbons, posters and bookmarks. The banners were hung throughout campus and bookmarks and ribbons were distributed. The students will be waving to cars and holding signs Tuesday at 7 a.m. to cars entering campus. The RED campaign project is designed to inspire increased awareness of Africa, as the students study the complex geography, politics and history of this continent.

The Art of Ikebana

In celebration of “Hinamatsuri” (Girl’s Day), sixth grade students learned the art of “Ikebana” (Japanese flower arranging). “Nageire” ceramic vases were constructed in visual arts class and then used to create their own flower arrangements. Mid-Pacific Institute alumnus, Linda Hamasaki ’59 and her assistants shared their knowledge of Ikebana. The students were excited and anxious to show their Ikebana with their families in celebration of Girl’s Day.

Arcadia Retirement Residence

The Arcadia Retirement Residence was the place to be for 14 middle school students. We spent the morning reading the newspaper to the residents as well as playing “mind exercise” games to sharpen their thinking skills. Lia Kim provided some soothing tunes on the piano while Ryan Yamauchi kept them guessing with his intriguing magic tricks. The highlight of the morning was simply sitting with them and “talking story.” The students were reminded of their grandparents while many of the residents thought of their own grandchildren. Their youthful spirits were much appreciated as they openly and candidly chatted about their families and past experiences and learned more about the people who now call Arcadia home.

Thank you to the 6th-8th graders who made this a special outing and were joined by Mrs. Ikeda, Mrs. Imai, and Mrs. Ka’ai.
