MORGANNA HAYES HONORED AS 2008 RED CROSS YOUTH HERO

Morganna Hayes was named the 2008 Red Cross Youth Hero and will be honored at a Red Cross Heroes Breakfast on September 27, 2008. Morganna is a senior at Mid Pacific Institute who organized their Red Cross Club and has served as club President for the past three years.

Since 2006, her efforts have energized student members to participate in activities at both upper and lower school campuses. She has organized numerous events to increase awareness of the Red Cross and its programs, and last year helped raise over $1,000 in donations for the Red Cross. The skills Morganna learned from Red Cross were put to good use one day at Sunset Beach, when Morganna and her mother heard someone yelling for help. A grandmother and her young grandson had been pushed into the water by large surf and were in trouble. Morganna and her mother ran to help. Morganna grabbed the young boy and brought him to the shore safely. She and her mom tried to calm the panicked mother. Then working together with another man, they were able to bring the grandmother out of the water and to safety as well. Morganna acted with a maturity and calmness beyond her years and used her Red Cross training that day.

"It is truly an honor to recognize this special individual who has shown leadership, caring and a commitment to the community," said Coralie Chun Matayoshi, Chief Executive Officer for the Hawaii Red Cross. "She has accomplished great deeds with no expectation of reward or recognition, and has given of herself to help make Hawaii a better place."
