It is wonderful being together, witnessing the creation of new friendships, and experiencing the exciting potential that comes with the beginning of the school year.

Our discussions and learning this week all centered around building our community through inquiring into these three questions:

What do you want our classroom to be like?

How can we care for our class and classroom?

What can we do to help in our class?

As we started experiencing our school day, the children discovered that everyone needed to contribute in order for our classroom function each day. They all determined that we needed people to be responsible for carrying our snack basket and balls to recess, and someone to take care of our class fish and plants. Our class voted and the majority of classmates wanted to rename our class fish. The new voted-upon name is... Bubbles. Our class also determined that we need to put things back where they belong, take care of the things that help us to learn in our classroom, and that everything in our classroom belongs to everyone.

As part of our morning meetings, we reflected upon the things, beyond material things in our lives, that make each of us happy. The children shared the following things such as: my friends, my sister, the experience of losing my first tooth, drawing with my mom. We went back to our classroom community and how our classroom also has a collective emotion or feeling to it each day. Our actions can cause the feeling of our classroom "heart" to feel happy or sad. I asked the children to come up with actions that can keep our classroom heart happy. The children were able to categorize their actions into the categories, which provided descriptors for our happy classroom community.

The children would like our classroom community to be happy, kind, responsible, respectful, and safe. Ask your child ways they can help contribute to keeping our classroom heart happy.

We had a lot of fun this week experiencing new things in our classroom and playing games to get to know one another. Please enjoy a few photos of our first moments together.

Happy to be together!

We are looking forward to a fun year!

Thank you for sharing your children with me each day!
