We are very excited for our trip to Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park! Here are some of the ways we've been preparing.

We looked closely at images of Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park and did a favorite thinking routine called, "See, Think, Wonder."

We prepared our Hawai`i Island Journal by creating beautiful cover artwork.

We used the Hawai`i Volcanoes National Park website to explore the places we'll be visiting. For each of those spots, we created a page with three things we were looking forward to seeing or were wondering about.

We also had a visit from Brian Grantham, our Educational Technology Coordinator, who shared a virtual reality volcano experience with us.

We also learned all about the logistics of our trip, like how long our flights were, what time we needed to be at the airport, and what islands we would be flying over.

Dr. Hussey also came to talk to us about what a special experience this trip will be. She reminded everyone about the importance of taking care of each other and acting respectfully and responsibly.

One of the places we'll be visiting, Kipukapuaulu, is a habitat for native birds like our very own `Apapane. To make sure we knew what to look and listen for, we made a guide in our Hawai`i Island Journal.

We didn't only pay attention to what they looked like, we also learned what their calls sound like.

We even quizzed each other to make sure we could recognize them.

We got rained out of our hiking (on campus) practice today, but we'll be practicing that next week. Another very special preparation has been happening in music. The class has been preparing a gift to take to Hawai`i Island. They learned a hula composed and choreographed by Kumu Hula Lanakila Casupang called, No Ka `Apapane. The class will be dancing this hula at the Visitor's Center. Don't worry, we'll take lots of pictures! The class is also preparing for the trip in Art. Check out Mrs. Day's blog post this week for the details.
