Jump-Rope-For-Heart Results

Great news! The students raised $12,763 for the American Heart Association through the Jump-Rope-for-Heart event in February. There were many students who collected generous donations from family and friends. Gerald C. raised over $700, as well as Taylor K. with $600, and Kiera O. and Bridget O. with a combined total of $500. Many other students raised over $100 each for the American Heart Association. We applaud the efforts of all our students and P.E. teacher, Pam Jenkins, who coordinated this fun and worthwhile event. In addition to raising student awareness about heart disease and the importance of fitness, we also teach our students about their civic responsibility by responding to the needs of the community. Thank you, parents, for encouraging your children to be compassionate learners.

Ever tried the art of Yo-yo-ing as a youngster? I remember neat little tricks like “around the world,” and “walk the dog,” which I’d often attempt with my wooden Duncan yo-yo. Well, times have changed in the world of yo-yo. This past Monday, 13-year-old Sterling Quinn, yo-yo champion from Seattle and one of the top twenty yo-yo champions in the U.S., performed for the students during lunch. These are yo-yo tricks unlike any others we have ever seen! He could throw his freewheeling yo-yo into the air and catch it right back on the string behind his back or under his leg! “Around the world” pales next to the tricks we saw. His performance, synchronized to upbeat music, captivated the students and staff who filled the dining room. He also answered students’ questions at the end of his performance. Little preschooler Jacob D. summarized Sterling’s performance aptly in one word — “Awesome!”

The Multiage 1-2 students are steeped in their geography inquiry of continents and cultures. Several weeks ago, the students began by drawing their own maps of the world (amazing indications of how students view the world). They listed all the things they already know about the world — names of continents, land masses, bodies of water, locations, etc. — then generated questions about things they’d like to know more about. Their inquiry has also been enriched by outside experts who’ve come into the classrooms to share their knowledge about the world. We’ve had a number of parents and grandparents coming in to share photos and artifacts of the faraway places they’ve traveled — China, Japan, Australia, Antarctica, Machu Picchu, India, and Mongolia, to name a few. In a few days, our young geographers will be presenting what they’ve learned in their research.

The Ho`olaule`a is next Friday, March 16. This event for the MPI community of students, families, and friends, will open at 11:30am for the preschool and elementary only so that our students can purchase their foods and other items before the middle- and high-schoolers, who’ll be at an assembly in the gym until noon. The teachers may have already enlisted your help as volunteers to take a small group of students through the Ho`olaule`a. Your child’s teacher will handle the distribution of scrip you’ve already ordered for your child. Please be sure to inform your child’s teacher if you’ll be taking your child home earlier than regular dismissal at 2:30pm. We are having afterschool care on March 16, so we’ll take these children back to the elementary campus. The Ho`olaule`a closes at 7:00pm, so come for dinner and some family fun. There are lots of games for the children, a bake sale, a water slide, and entertainment. All proceeds support student government and student club activities.

March 16 is also the last day of school before Spring Break. There will be no school from March 19 through March 30. However, all school offices will be open. The preschool/elementary school office hours are 7:00am – 3:30pm. School resumes April 2.

We’ll also be taking any unclaimed items in the lost-and-found bin to charity. And we have a lot of expensive items in the bin!

Parents, I know you’ve already received information on the tuition for school year 2007-2008. Contracts and other important information will be mailed home during spring break. I strongly encourage you to observe the due date for re-enrolling your child. We have a wait list at every grade level (we’ve been assessing new applicants each Saturday since January and have two more Saturday sessions), and I know you’d like to make sure that your child has a place on our roster for next year. I’d personally like to see every child (and family) return next year!

For our children,

Edna L. Hussey
Principal
