Shave ice in rainbow flavors. Chili and rice. Hot dogs. Salad. Chicken. Popcorn. Desserts. Fruit. Whet your appetite? The annual Welcome Barbecue is Saturday, September 4, 3:00-5:00pm on the elementary campus for all MPI preschool and elementary families. We schedule this event each year (this was an Epiphany School tradition, quickly assimilated into Mid-Pacific Institute's school culture) to bring all families together to strengthen our school community. With several new students and families in preschool and elementary, we hope that all families will set aside a couple of hours this coming Saturday to meet and greet newfound and old-time friends. Enjoy some old-fashioned picnic games. This fifth-grade parent-organized special event, chaired by Leslie Kobayashi, is also supported by the fifth grade students and our parent `Ohana. We hope to see you next Saturday.
I'd say routines are well established in all classrooms -- what to do in Readers' and Writers' Workshop, how to play the math games and work cooperatively, when it's the appropriate time to ask questions, share observations, and listen carefully. Curricular inquiries have begun, and the children are beginning their investigations and careful reading of materials in trade books, newspapers, or websites. The classroom teachers' weblogs are posted each weekend, and it's the responsibility of all parents to read these postings consistently. All MPI preschool and elementary parents receive an electronic message alerting them to a recent posting. Sometimes teachers provide an overview of the past week, or they'll take as aspect of students' learning, such as a math concept, and explain the instructional strategy. Other times student work is explained; teachers point out in the documentation the learning going on. There are already many examples in the three weeks of blogs on our website. Familiarize yourself with the weblogs.
Picture taking isn't ordinarily a newsworthy item, except when the experience has been different this year for all of us. Outdoor pictures! How lovely is that compared to colored background slides! You should have seen the entire school during the photo session this past Friday morning. It is quite a feat arranging the preschoolers and elementary grade school students in one area all looking forward -- and smiling. For the first time since we've been taking these all-school photos, photographers Tracy Wright-Corvo and Michael Torres had everyone laughing and enjoying the moment. I can only imagine what a great photo that one will be! In autoline one afternoon, I was talking to one of the students about picture talking. The student asked me why I thought there was a large fan right next to us when we were taking our individual photos. "Hmm," I said to Alyssa, "maybe because it was hot outside and the fan was to help cool us down?" And she responded, quite knowingly, "For effect, Mrs. Hussey, for effect. You know, the wind blowing our hair?" "Ahhh," I nodded, "that seems like it." Very observant, yes?
Open House this Wednesday, September 1, 6:00-8:00pm, is for parents of students in multiage third - fourth grades and fifth grade. We begin in the dining room before heading to classrooms. There is no childcare offered for Open House, and we prefer that parents only attend this very important evening session.
Preschool parents also have an important education session this Tuesday, August 31st, 5:30-7:00pm, in the dining room.
The faculty and I look forward to seeing you at the Welcome-to-MPI event this Saturday. Hoping for sunshine and trade winds.
For our children,
Edna L. Hussey
