Thank you, parents, for showering the faculty and staff with cards and Valentine eats. Sinfully delicious! Now that we’ve moved past February 14, we ask that you do not send your child to school with candies, cookies, and other sweets. Please keep these foods at home. The teachers and I have also noticed the kinds of snacks our children are bringing to school. Again, nutritious snacks (and just enough for recess) such as fruit, crackers, cheese, yogurt, bagels, etc., will help your child be more focused in the classroom. We can’t stress this enough. But thank you again for your thoughtfulness.
Sharing Jonathan’s spotlight was visiting teacher-author Ralph Fletcher who spent the entire Tuesday doing teaching demonstrations on poetry, writing groups, and reading aloud in various classrooms. Several teachers were able to observe firsthand our literacy expert. We also met with him in an afterschool inservice session to learn more about his professional and children’s books. He inspired us to write with our students and to keep a writing journal or notebook to capture thoughts, ideas, pictures, notes, etc. — anything that might inspire a piece of writing. It was an incredible day of learning for the faculty.
We’re very happy to announce that the preschool and elementary school raised a final total of $964.12 (coins galore!) for the Aloha United Way and another $5,716 in the Jump-Rope-for-Heart program last week. Amazing! Parents, we know that your child’s active participation in these events is largely the result of your encouragement. Thank you for teaching them about giving generously to community needs.
We are including the March calendar this week in the Thursday packet. Please check your child’s backpack for the white envelope.
We welcome our new afterschool supervisor, Dezarae Ramos, an MPI alumna, recently graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is taking over the snack preparation and assisting Mrs. Schultz with the Kindergartners.
Our last day of preschool admission assessment is this Saturday. By this time, our preschool team will have observed 90 preschool applicants. Admission sessions continue for Kindergarten until mid-April. And on February 25, we will be assessing several children applying for admission into first and second grade. Applicants for fouth grade will be assessed on March 4.
Yes! We’ve been quite busy! We’re looking forward to the upcoming Presidents’ Day holiday.
For our children,
Edna L. Hussey
